Research interests:

I joined the School of Geography in April 2010 and I am currently working with Dr Steven Cummins on the National Evaluation of the Healthy Towns Programme. My main research interests include environmental and psychosocial determinants of health and well-being, evaluation of complex social interventions research, and interrelationships between research, policy and practice.

My PhD (2004, Paris V University, France) looked at environmental and psychosocial factors of the criminal-victim interaction using a cross-cultural perspective.

After my PhD (2004–2005) I led a research study on incivilities and vandalism in spaces of business open to the public: French railway stations, post offices and a major department store.

I pursued my research exploring environmental and psychosocial factors of fear of crime and sense of safety in built environments at Lisbon University Institute IUL-ISCTE until 2008.

In 2008–2010 I have worked for the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (Glasgow) on the GoWell research and learning 10-year programme that investigates the impact of investment in housing and urban regeneration on the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. I was involved in systematic reviews of UK evidence on Tenure Mix effects and qualitative studies of Mixed-Tenure neighbourhoods.

I have been part of research programmes funded by Department of Health, Glasgow Housing Association, the Scottish Government, NHS Health Scotland and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, French Foreign Office, Science and Technology Foundation (Portugal), SNCF, Galeries Lafayette and La Poste (France).

Other research interests

My research interests also include environmental awareness, pro-environmental and conservation behaviour, environmental education, Buddhist values and socio-environmental research; social identity, social representations and stereotypes; community development and social regeneration.

I have strong interests in implementing research into practice, in collaborations with policy-makers and practitioners in the areas of urban planning and urban design, crime, public health, community development and environmental protection.

Other duties

In 2006–2010 I served as Board member of the International Association for People-Environment Studies and organised two international Young Researchers’ Workshops with over 40 attendees.

I have co-edited a special issue of Psicologia (Journal of Portuguese Association of Psychology) on Spaces, Risk and Social Behaviour (2007) and acted as the guest editor of Bulletin of People-Environment Studies on Environmental Psychology in Different Parts of the World (2008) – copies available upon request.
