Areas of responsibility:
In my role as the School of Geography cartographer I am the member of support staff responsible for producing maps and diagrams as artwork for publication in academic books and journals and for teaching purposes in the form of 35mm slides, overheads or powerpoint presentations. As this is all done using illustrating and desk-top publishing software on a Macintosh computer, my job description has expanded so that I now maintain the departmental website. I also produce display material for notice boards and perform a host of other duties such as laminating documents, binding projects, and advising students on cartographic matters.

The vast majority of my work is for members of the School of Geography but I am available to produce maps and diagrams for non-geographers by arrangement. (You just have to provide plenty of notice and an inter-departmental order form).

I completed the Diploma in Cartography course at the former Oxford Polytechnic in 1980 and was employed by the Department of Geography at the then City of London Polytechnic later that year. I moved to Queen Mary in April 1988. I am a member of both the British Cartographic Society and the Society of Cartographers, and have seen the tools of my profession change from the traditional pen and ink to the current digital methods using software such as Adobe Illustrator.
