Migration, ethnicity, gender, South Asian diaspora, whiteness and racisms, oral histories and narratives.
Joanna was appointed at Queen Mary in May 2005 as a Research Fellow for an ESRC funded project entitled: Global Cities at Work: Migrant labour in low paid employment in London. She held an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Centre for Urban History, University of Leicester and her thesis was recognised by the award of the prestigious Michaelis-Jena Ratcliff Prize 2005, ‘for an important contribution by an individual to the study of Folk Lore and Folk Life in Great Britain and Ireland.’
She gained a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship in 2007 for a project entitled ‘Oral Histories of Ugandan Asians in Britain’. This aimed to explore the role of memories, gender, class, place and generation in shaping the identities and experiences of Ugandan Asians in Britain. In 2009 she was awarded the Oral History Association Book Award for Negotiating Boundaries in the City for an ‘outstanding contribution to oral history’.
