Ulmus glabra (Wych Elm)

It can reach up to 35m high (Gamlin, 1985), forms a rounded tree often dividing into 2-3 large branches near the base and forms a closed canopy (Clapham, et al. 1962). Alternate leaves from 8-14cm long, unequal at the base with pink or red flowers early in the year which turn into flat, round, winged nuts which ripen as the leaves open. The bark of older trees tends to be rugged and broken into irregular rectangles (Wilkinson, 1976).
