Forms a loosely or tufted perennial, 20-100cm high, sometimes with slender rhizomes. The stem may be bent or erect at the base, and is slender and wiry and the leaves are green and hairless. The blades are bristle like, are very tightly rolled, 0.3-0.8mm wide, stiff and rough towards the top (Hubbard, 1974).
