Hornbeam is common in Europe and western Asia and there are some American and Japanese species. Today in Britain it remains wild only in the counties adjacent to London and these trees are scattered in the south and east. Representations are scarce or unknown in northern England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland making it the most local of our native trees (Wilkinson, 1976).
