Congratulations to the class of 2017

Over 100 students graduated from the School of Geography during this year's summer graduation ceremonies, earning degrees in geography, environmental science, as well as those with joint honours in business management.

Students celebrated their achievements by raising a glass with their peers, family, friends and academics in the historic Octagon. After this, the Class of 2017 gathered in front of the Queens’ Building for the traditional group photo.

Each year, the School of Geography gives out a number of awards in recognition of exceptional academic achievement. Recipients from the graduating third year included:

  • Koh Yi Thong received the Michael Alexander Jones Memorial Award for the best overall performance in the third year, as well as the A.E. Smailes Prize for outstanding quality of his dissertation. Koh also received the Drapers' Company Prize for academic excellence. 
  • Kristine Bull-Sletholt and Denis McFadden both received the Roger Lee Prize for the best dissertation in the fields of economic geography, development geography or geography of social justice.
  • Dina Morsy-Fahmy and Eleanor Dixon-Brandt received the Simon Tavana Writing Prize for creative writing in human geography third year coursework.
  • Mishma Abraham received the Environmental Science Outstanding Performance Prize.
  • Tanzina Khatun, Shajiyah Begum-Uddin and Emma Woodhouse received the Student Service and Contribution Award for making significant contributions to QMUL and the School of Geography throughout their studies.
  • Charlotte Stevens and Neiad Adams-Austin both received the Principal's Prize.

"My degree provided me with the intellectual rigour and practical skills that are relevant and indispensable regardless of which industry or career I pursue after graduation", said top of the class student, Koh.

PhD student James Brand who also graduated today, said: "I’m very proud to be graduating today, and happy that at QMUL I had the opportunity to work on research that addressed an important environmental issue." His PhD research, which was supervised by Professor Kate Spencer, focused on 'Assessing the risk of pollution from historic landfills'. 

Professor David Pinder, formerly of School of Geography at QMUL, who now works at Roskilde University in Denmark also joined the celebrations as two of his PhD students Casper Laing Ebbensgaard and Cecile Sachs Olsen, also graduated today.

Head of School, Professor Alison Blunt, said: "My colleagues and I are delighted to celebrate the success of the graduating class of 2017. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with our undergraduate and PhD students who are graduating today. Many congratulations on your achievements and very best wishes for the future. We look forward to keeping in touch and welcoming you back to alumni events."
