Dr Steve Cummins has been appointed to the new National Institute of Health Research's Public Health Research Programme Research Funding Board. The PHR Programme has been set up by the Department of Health to provide new knowledge on benefits, cost-effectiveness, acceptability and wider impacts of non-NHS interventions to improve public health and reduce health inequalities. The board will meet three times per year and will have a research budget of £10 million per annum by year 3.
He has also been invited to present at a meeting on the Public Health Effects of Food Deserts by the US National Academy of Science/Institute of Medicine at the end of January. The primary purpose of the meeting is to inform the USDA Economic Research Service's congressionally mandated work on 'food deserts'. The output will be a part of ERS's report to the US Congress which will be delivered in July 2009.
