Global cities at work

Research plan

The plan for this project is to focus on six sectors of the economy in which migrant workers are known to be employed in low-paid work:

  • London Underground (cleaning)
  • General office cleaning
  • Hospitality
  • Home care work
  • Construction
  • Food processing

In each case, we plan to conduct interviews with workers and employers, including representatives from employers' associations in the sector - 120 workers, 20 employers.

Interviews will then be conducted with a sub-set of the workers interviewed - 60 interviews.

Focus groups with low-paid migrant workers will be conducted during the lifetime of the project to back up the findings and explore ideas in more depth - 20 in total.

Policy interviews with relevant people from GLA, national government and political organisations - 20 interviews.

Background data will be used from the LFS and 2001 Census.
