Global cities at work

Objectives of the project

The research has four key objectives:

  1. Conceptually, it will link diverse debates about transnational migration, global cities, low-paid employment and household survival practices in a holistic approach.

  2. Empirically, it will develop important new data sets outlining the role and experience of migrant labour in low-paid employment in London, highlighting their household survival practices.

  3. In terms of public policy, it will explore the intersection of migration and government policy, highlighting the ways in which immigration, labour market and anti-poverty policies affect low-paid migrant workers and their families.

  4. Methodologically, the research is designed to use a number of different sources of data and research methods to produce a rich account of migrant labour in London, incorporating the views and experiences of low-paid migrants themselves.
