Research questions

  1. How and why are diasporic identities shaped by imaginative geographies of the city? What are the connections between cities as sites of origin and resettlement? How do such connections shape diasporic networks of memory and attachment within and between cities? What are the material and imaginative practices and networks that connect diaspora cities?
  2. To what extent is Calcutta a diaspora city? When and why did members of the Anglo-Indian, Brahmo, Chinese and Jewish communities migrate to London, Toronto and Jerusalem? What diasporic connections exist within and between each community?
  3. How are imaginative geographies of Calcutta shaped and articulated by these communities over diaspora space? How do cultural representations and practices foster and recast ideas and memories about Calcutta in London, Toronto and Jerusalem?
