Step 3b – Identify a potential supervisor and an advertised PhD topic
Before making a formal application for an advertised PhD topic, you should discuss with the named supervisor how you would develop the topic into a Research Proposal.
When contacting the potential supervisor, you should provide them with your initial ideas on how to develop the Research Proposal, and an up-to-date curriculum vitae (outlining your educational and professional experience). The Research Proposal should be 1500 words in length and outline:
- The academic context of the proposed research and review of the relevant literature
- Your research aims/questions
- An outline Methodology, including consideration of any ethical issues raised by the research
- An outline timetable of research
